“First Rum Distillery in Cambodia” – A Journey of Fusion and Exploration
In the heart of Phnom Penh, where tradition meets innovation, emerges Samai – Cambodia’s first and only premium rum distillery. “Samai,” a Khmer word meaning ‘new generation,’ encapsulates the spirit of a brand deeply rooted in Cambodian culture yet driven by the curiosity to explore and discover.

The journey began in 2014 when Venezuelan entrepreneurs, Daniel Pacheco and Antonio Lopez de Haro, questioned why Cambodia, with its abundance of high-quality sugarcane, was not crafting its own rums. Joined by Ms. Moang Darachampich, an undiscovered talent and Cambodia’s inaugural Master Distiller, fueled by this curiosity, they set forth on a mission to establish Cambodia’s first premium rum distillery from the ground up—a venture destined to redefine the rum landscape in the region.

Samai pays homage to age-old rum-making traditions while embracing a fusion of Latin American and Asian influences. The distillery, situated in the ideal climate of Cambodia, sources high-quality, locally grown ingredients such as fine molasses, red Kampot pepper, and natural Cambodian honey. This unique blend of Cambodian flavors and Latino American distillation methods results in Samai rums – complex, full of character, and a source of national pride.
